Any car on there 15 years or younger will NOT be able to get into the US. Customs will sieze it at the ship yard.

Oh my gosh, don't get me started on this. Cory, you know how much time and effort I've put into trying to get cars here from Japan. Guys, regardless of what you've heard, there is NO WAY to get a Japanese car here unless it's older than 25 years, the NHTSA has made it impossible. I could make a post about 3 pages long about all the info i've learned in the last few months, I'd say I've spent about 400 hours researching and talking to the NHTSA. It's impossible.

I should re-phrase that. It's impossible unless you have the money to crash test 4-8 cars of the exact year make and model that you wanna bring over, have a registered importer's license-which you need a garage, mailing address, minimum 5 full-time employees, computerized filing system, and a laundry list of other things-and even then half the time the NHTSA still denies ya. There is a list of cars that are approved for importing, but you still need to get them federalized, which is another 15-20k. If you can personally know someone that works at the docks in Japan they could ship one here, but then you have to worry about it getting seized at the docks here. Then if you do get it here, you have to worry about licensing. If yer real lucky, you MAY just be able to walk into the DMV and pull a fast one, just go up to the counter, tell 'em you have to register a car, and sometimes they won't ask questions. If you don't get it registered, if you get caught, your car gets demolished. That's the long and short of it

But you can't really get it registered w/o a VIN.. So yeah, no Jap cars for anyone. And if they are Jap and here, they're gray market cars and whatever insurance is on them WILL NOT COVER ANY CLAIM. So basically you don't have insurance. And the cops or any EPA can seize it right where you are at any time.
